Tools needed to edge your lawn:

  • Flat Shovel or Garden Spade
  • Mattock or Grubbing Hoe
  • Leather Gloves
  • Safety Glasses
  • Wheelbarrow
  • Marking Paint or string line with 2 stakes or garden hose.

Draw a line with marking paint or a string line where you want the edge of your grass to be. A great way to layout curves in the edge of your lawn is to string out your garden hose in nice even arcs.

Stand on the lawn and insert the spade into the edge of the lawn at a 45 degree angle 3″ deep. Lift out the sod and soil and dump it into the wheelbarrow. Continue digging along your line.

After removing the sod, clean up the 45 degree slope with your mattock or grubbing hoe. Compost the sod and soil you have generated with this task. Maintain your edging with regular hoeing along the edges or your lawn.
