The first thing you do when you’re planting annual flowers is till up the soil and mix in the necessary amendments. Mix into your soil some compost and fertilizer with systemic insecticide. The systemic insecticide will keep any bugs in the soil from damaging your annuals.

Check the label on your annuals for sun requirements and suggested distance between the plants. The label will also tell you how high your plants will grow.

A rule of thumb for distance between the plants is six to 8 inches for the smaller annuals 12 to 16 inches for larger plants. This is only a general guideline.

By planting your annuals on a triangular pattern, they seem to fill in better this way and it makes for a nicer looking annual bed.

Beans In A Teacup

Hi welcome to the Phil The Gardener Show. We bring you garden tips and helpful hints to help you have a beautiful garden. If you have any gardening questions, concerns or successes to share, send them to phil at philthegardener.com or go to http://www.philthegardener.com where you can write in to us.

Remember a while back I did a video episode on the magic bean and how something so small as this seed can actually grow? God has put enough energy into a small been to produce a large fruit bearing plant.

One thing I talked about was how you can sprout a been under your sink and by checking them every day or so you would be able to see how the roots grow and how the bean emerges and pushes up looking for sunlight, but don’t forget it.

The bean plant growing under dark conditions have not received the sunlight needed to help them produce energy through photosynthesis. Plants absorb light, using the pigment chlorophyll, which is the reason most plants have a green color. The stalk and leaves are almost pure white.

You can grow beans in all kinds of containers like a coffee can or a teacup.

Setting the timer on your lawn or irrigation system means starting with the beginning. Most timers are programmed with a basic concept for setting the current time and day and then setting each zone to operate a specific amount of time.

During the summer set the lawn zones to run a couple of cycles during the cool of the morning. By deep watering your lawn, shrubs, and trees you don’t have to irrigate every day. Check with your city to see what their watering days are. Most cities have an ordinance in place to allow watering your gardens and lawn only on certain days.

The amount of water you can apply in on cycle varies with the soil type you have. Two ten minute cycles allow the water to soak in better than one twenty minute cycle. You want the soil to absorb all the water you apply and then allow some time before applying the next cycle, this will reduce runoff. A cycle is the delivery of water for a determined amount of time to a group of valves.
