Some varieties of grass will grow so compactly that the roots will choke themselves out. The roots will grow so tightly together that they will not allow water to penetrate into the soil.

If water does not soak into the soil. It will just run off and the grass will die. With the roots being this tight together, they won’t allow air in to help maintain a healthy grass.

Stay tuned for a solution in the next episode.

Determine what your target weed is so that you can apply the correct weed spray. There are two basic type of weeds, broad leaf weeds and grassy type weeds.

There are other types of weeds but those are the two main types we have to deal with on a regular basis. The wrong kind of grass in your lawn or planter is considered a grassy weed. Most of the types of broad leaf weeds have leaves that are more rounded.

When looking for the correct weed spray to apply always read the label first. This will help you to determine if you’re using the correct chemical and also the amount recommended to be used for each application.

Once you’ve identified the type of weed that you’re going to target. Follow the label directions in order to not over apply and unintentionally kill your other plants.

Remember, always read and follow the label.

You need to adjust your lawn mower height in order to get a nice even cut on your lawn. If one tire is adjusted to a different height than the others the mower can tip and gouge the turf as you are mowing. This can leave unsightly bare spots in your grass.

Adjusting the mower height to 2 1/2 to 3 inches is pretty typical for most fescue types of grass. This can vary with the type of turf you are cutting. You would cut lower growing grasses such as St. Augustine at a lower mowing height.

During the heat of the summer mowing at a higher cutting level will help to cut down on evaporation and keep weed seeds from germinating.
