The Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival
Festivities officially start on October 13-14, 2007.
As far as the the giant pumpkin growers who came from as far away as Washington and Oregon Monday October, 8 was the kick-off of the festival. The pumpkins were carefully transferred from trucks and trailers to the 5-ton scale under the watchful eyes of the officials from the San Mateo County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office of Weights, Sealers, and Measures with special harnesses and forklifts.
Registration and weigh-in began at 7:00am. There were over 60 entrants vying for a piece of the $20,000 prize money. The champion pumpkin grown by Thad Starr received $6 per pound. Defending champion Joel Holland, of Puyallup, WA brought a pumpkin that weighed in at 1,384 lbs. for 2nd place.
