When you are choosing the correct grow light to get your vegetable plants started before it is warm enough in your garden, don’t use incandescent lights because they are too hot and will burn tender foliage. The full-color spectrum fluorescent lights are the best, because they are as close to natural sunlight as is possible. A cheap grow light method is to use a combination of one cool white fluorescent and one standard fluorescent. You can bring the light down to within three inches of your vegetables.
