You need to adjust your lawn mower height in order to get a nice even cut on your lawn. If one tire is adjusted to a different height than the others the mower can tip and gouge the turf as you are mowing. This can leave unsightly bare spots in your grass.

Adjusting the mower height to 2 1/2 to 3 inches is pretty typical for most fescue types of grass. This can vary with the type of turf you are cutting. You would cut lower growing grasses such as St. Augustine at a lower mowing height.

During the heat of the summer mowing at a higher cutting level will help to cut down on evaporation and keep weed seeds from germinating.
