Vegetable gardening faq - frequently asked questions

Question for Phil The Gardener: What are the best veggies for partial shade? I have a 2 ft garden along 100 feet of nieghbors 6 ft. fence north to south, early to mid summer good sun, but its a short day as summer progresses. What vegetable plants do best in medium sun? Thanks … A new Phil The Gardener reader.

Answer for new Phil The Gardener reader: 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day is required to grow most vegetables. Check to see how much direct sunlight your area along the fence gets and make notes. You can raise bush beans, broccoli, cauliflower, peas, potatoes, summer squash, or rhubarb with 4-5 hours of direct sunlight.

You probably should raise salad crops if you get under 4 hours of sun light chard, lettuce or spinach.

As far as a small, narrow garden, if you have enough sunlight. You can grow train vines on trellises made of bamboo poles, lathe stakes, or a section of fence supported by upright poles. Pole beans, cucumbers, melons, and squash are sure do well on upright supports.

I hope these suggestions have helped you to “Git er Done”.
