Planting Shrubs
When you are digging a hole to plant a shrub, you should dig the hole twice the diameter of the root ball. The hole needs to be the depth of the root ball.
After digging the hole twice as wide as the pot set the plant still in the pot down into the hole. Lay your shovel along side of the pot to gauge the correct depth of the plant. The root ball should be approximately one inch higher than the existing soil level.
Always scarify the sides of the hole to allow the roots to penetrate the surrounding soil more easily. Scarifying the soil is roughing it up to reduce the amount of smooth edges that could cause the plant’s root to encircle the root ball and be root bound. In some soils a smooth sided hole acts as a pot in the ground.
