Pruning Viburnum

Question: How far back can I cut Viburnum and not kill it? What I have is an hour glass figure and would like to correct this.

Answer: Spring flowering shrubs such as Viburnum should be pruned right after they bloom. You can generally remove up to one third of the plant without harm.
Depending on the variety of viburnum you have, it may be best to remove limbs to bring the shrub back into shape rather than shearing. If the shrub is way out of shape the main thing is to be patient and not try to change it all at once. Pruning and patience will guide it back to your desired shape.

There are over 150 species of Viburnum, most of them grow in the northern hemisphere. Some are evergreen and some are deciduous and most are shrubs. They make handsome ornamentals.
