You can tell if a tree is too big to stake. If it has a natural lean you may not be able to
pull it back with just a stake. If your tree trunk is bigger than the stake holding it then you either have to get a bigger stake or there is no point in staking it. You need to evaluate the situation and decide if the tree can be staked or you need to remove and replace it.
